4 Star Review of The Hopeless by Dawn Robertson and Kristen Hope Mazzola

The Hopeless (The Huntress, #2)The Hopeless by Dawn Robertson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Book 2 in the series. I really enjoyed book 1, but book 2 wasn’t as fulfilling for me. Maybe it is because book 1 was 144 pages and book 2 is only 71, so there is less happening. So Ellie is torn between her feelings for Theo and Linc and the need to rescue a baby and be a good mother to right the wrongs of the past. I found the storyline good, but there was a bit of jumping in the plot that left me confused. Like when Ella and Theo are at dinner and the next minute they are “saying goodbye” at the hotel….wait, what just happened?…..I wasn’t sure if it was some sort of dream sequence or what.

Overall I am intrigued enough with what did happen in book 2 that I need to get my hands on book 3 which is due in Jan 2017, but unfortunately I was left wanting more from book 2.

Pretty Lost Dolls (Pretty Stolen Dolls, #2)Pretty Lost Dolls by Ker Dukey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Pretty Lost Dolls is book two which follows immediately after Pretty Stolen Dolls and they must be read in order. I am a fan of dark and twisted reads and this was amazing.

So we pick up where book 1 ended and Jade has once again been captured by Benny, but this time Benny isn’t working alone. We learn more about who Benny is and possibly why he is the way he is and OMG it is so twisted. There were some real stomach turning things in this book, and overall it was a good story. Although Jade is much stronger now that when she was younger, Benny and his helper are so mentally twisted that I don’t think it will save her. I can’t believe it was possible, but I think I was more on the edge of my seat during this story than I was during the first. Trying to understand who Benny was kept me intrigued. I was shocked to see the ending and I think it leaves the chance that there could be more coming from this series.

About Ker Dukey

My books all tend to be darker romance, edge of you seat, angst filled reads. My advice to my readers when starting one of my titles…prepare for the unexpected.

I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether it be through lyrics or bed time stories with my sisters growing up.

My mum would always have a book in her hand when I was young and passed on her love for reading, inspiring me to venture into writing my own. I tend to have a darker edge to my writing. Not all love stories are made from light; some are created in darkness but are just as powerful and worth telling.

When I’m not lost in the world of characters I love spending time with my family. I’m a mum and that comes first in my life but when I do get down time I love attending music concerts or reading events with my younger sister.

Come find me on Facebook, where I love interacting with my readers.

4 Star Review of His Esclava by Jessica Ingro

His EsclavaHis Esclava by Jessica Ingro

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

His Esclava is a short dark story that is the story of Chloe who has signed up to be a slave for Eduardo. She is under the impression that she will be under his control which is fine with her, but it turns out that Eduardo is not nice and doesn’t want companionship from her. It is really hot and I really liked it. There were a few moments that seemed a bit under developed which is mostly because it is a short story. I was grabbed from the beginning and loved the way she was tormented by her feelings for Eduardo and Matteo. I really enjoyed the story and it was dark and steamy….just missed a bit of a spark to get a 5 star rating.

5 Star Review of Buttons and Lace by Penelope Sky

Buttons and LaceButtons and Lace by Penelope Sky

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

WOW! I’m not sure where Ms. Sky got her inspiration for this story, but it was fantastic. Let me preface by saying I am a huge fan of dark reads and it is hard to find something that is really different that the normal mafia type books when you search for a dark story, but this was so much more than anything I have read in the past!

So we meet Pearl who is on a vacation with her boyfriend Jacob when she is kidnapped and ends up being sold in a slave auction in Europe. She is not one to back down easily and is always looking for a way to escape and even mouths off to those holding her which causes her to catch the eye of a high bidder at the auction who wants her because of the fight she shows. It turns out that he is a truly evil guy and has a lot a cruel friends and enemies. Just when she thinks her horrible experience is over and she is rescued it turns out to be another twist by another powerful man who wants to also punish and control her.

Crow is a powerful man and he is out for blood after someone is taken from him in a completely horrific way. His goal in life is to punish those that have wronged him even if that means others get hurt along the way.

Now, without spoiling the story I don’t want to say much more, but I can say the story was absolutely awesome if you like a dark read. Yes, there were times that the scenes kind of did a fade to black when there were moments of abuse, but I think it was perfect. And yes, we didn’t learn much about Pearl in the beginning, but I felt that was intentional since she was being held against her will by a very evil man. I was amazed at the strength she showed and my only problem was that I didn’t realize till the end that this was book 1 in a multibook series. I am so vested in Pearl and Crow and what happens next that I can hardly contain myself.

5 Star Review of Acquisition: The Complete Series by Celia Aaron

Acquisition: The Complete SeriesAcquisition: The Complete Series by Celia Aaron

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read the whole series earlier this year and loved it. It is a fantastic dark and twisted story. I’ll briefly recap the series, but if you want to read detailed reviews, check out the links to my other reviews at the end. Celia Aaron is not a new author to me, but this is darker than the other titles I have read by her. Please take note of the warnings as this book is a dark erotic romance. I really love the Complete Series and having it in a ‘box’ is wonderful.

The plot involves the most powerful people in the South and the competition to find the next Sovereign. Sinclair Vinemont is one of this year’s competitors and his Acquisition is Stella Rousseau. He is on the verge of sending her father to prison and he will prevent that from happening as long as she agrees to become his slave for one year. Stella knows nothing about what she has agreed to, she is a commoner and only a few select members of the elite are aware of what the competition truly entails. We learn that during the one year there are four trails where there are three competitors being tested. There are also seven rules that govern the competition. Cal, the current Sovereign is in control of planning the events and his goal is not only to entertain the group, but to show their power over the lower class.

“The only way to win is to become one of them, to really be the sort of monster that can rule the entire depraved aristocracy with an iron fist.”

This series held my attention the entire time. I was on the edge of my seat. I loved the tension between Stella and Sin. The way they were drawn to each other….the way she hated him yet, still wanted him when he was so cut off from her….the relationship between them was perfect. Be warned, that you will need to read all four books and even then you are wishing for more….this series is that good….I was sad when it was over.

5 Star Review of Elicit by M Never

ElicitElicit by M. Never

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow, this is a great dark read! I didn’t really know what to expect when going in, but M. Never can write a story like no other. So when I first picked this up, I hadn’t read others in the series, but I saw reviews that said to read Owned first and they were right. Owned is the parallel story to this one. Owned is Kayne’s story and Elicit is Jett’s and they repeat a few scenes from both perspectives.

It actually is 98% flashback which works really well. We learn more about how Jett came to be who he is and even though it wasn’t called an epilogue there was a nice ending wrapped in a perfect bow! So Jett runs Mansion and is in charge of all the girls in the house. One day the doorbell rings and London is there and things are never the same after that. London has a very dark past…very, very dark. Turns out that she was brainwashed into the role she now finds herself. There are some really, OMG, I didn’t see that coming moments which took my breath away. Jett sees her more than just another girl, but can he convince her to see herself as more?

So some people may find the fundamental theme of the story troubling, not quite as bad as Owned, but the early part of London’s story was not pleasant. Again things are not quite what they seem, but if you already read Owned, you know some of the secrets of the Mansion. Actually London’s journey was not that bad from when she meets Jett, but her past was oh so dark. So if Dark is your thing this is a great series. I can’t wait to catch up with the rest of the series.

5 Star Review of Darkest Before Dawn by Stevie J Cole

Darkest Before DawnDarkest Before Dawn by Stevie J. Cole
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Darkest Before Dawn is definitely not for everyone, but I really like a good dark read and this was a very complex book that pulled at all my emotions.

Max Carter was raised in the mob and at a very young age he was forced to make a choice that sealed his fate. He’s not a good guy. He doesn’t hesitate when killing the filth in this world. Does that make him good or bad? When his sister, Lila, goes missing; the police won’t help so he infiltrates the human trafficking ring that took her. He becomes one of them to try to track her location and get her back.

Ava Donovan isn’t the normal girl they take, but greed gets the best of them and plan to double dip since someone wants her gone. But when she is taken to Max for ‘training’ she sees something in him and he in her that will change them forever. When she finally gets away and returns to her normal life she is told that she should hate him, but she can’t hate him since he is the one who saved her. Will she be able to move on with her life?

Wow, so I really liked this story. It was really dark and there were moments that I didn’t think would happen like they did. Even though we shouldn’t like Max, I couldn’t help myself….I liked him and wanted Ava to end up with him. And how Ava reacted when she was back home. It was amazing how everyone was so sure how she should feel and what she needed to do to recover. I really enjoyed the twist of how Jonny linked them together. It was so perfect! So if you are in the mood for an amazingly dark and twisted journey, you do not want to miss this one!
